Does Skincare Have a Gender?

"Gender" is a subject that people have been talking about for a long time. It's something that has become less taboo and more inclusive; thanks to the many years of protesting, marching, and fighting done by the LGBTQIA+ community and its' allies.

For centuries, "gender" was a topic that a majority of people were too scared to speak up about. The past few years have been a period of significant growth in the LGBTQIA+ community, with it infiltrating into many different communities (such as the beauty industry) and continuing to expand.

There are a plethora of many different genders, and if you aren't familiar with them, that's okay! Many people are still learning the ins and outs of different aspects of the community. What's important is to keep an open mind and understand the importance of educating yourself about the topic.

According to Cosmopolitan, there are 12 main gender terms you should keep in mind: Agender, Gender Nonconforming, Sex, Gender, Cisgender, Cishet, Transgender, Genderqueer, Gender Fluid, Non-binary, Intersex, and Orientation. All of these terms are completely different, yet very similar at the same time. Though they all have different meanings, they all relate to one thing: gender.

One thing 2020 taught us is that we are all human beings despite our differences. No matter our race, skin color, sexual orientation, or status, we are all connected to each other and should support one another. Gender has formed a barrier in the beauty community for ages, but now it is a space that allows everyone to join. Skincare is no longer considered "feminine" or something you have to be a "girl" to enjoy.

When it comes to the beauty community, skincare is genderless. Beauty doesn't apply to one specific group or person; beauty is inclusive and made for everybody, no matter who you are or what you identify as. As cliché as it sounds, beauty comes from the inside out. The only requirement you need to indulge in your self-care or self-love journey is internal beauty.

At Beautyque, we strongly value inclusivity and standing by the LGBTQIA+ community, so we work with brands who do as well. Some of our favorite inclusive and genderless skincare brands that continue to celebrate beauty and self-love are Liftlab Skincare, Priori Skincare, Elevate CBD Cosmetics, Founder's Formula, and Fresh Chemistry. These brands are proud allies of the community and continue to support those apart of the beauty industry (and glowing skin!).

Skincare, like makeup or hair, has no gender. It's made for every individual despite their gender/sexual orientation/identity. Everyone deserves to love themselves, whether that's taking care of their skin, spending (too much) money on makeup, or indulging on a meditation retreat. Beauty will never be limited to a specific group- it's made for everyone and has no gender.
