How to do Cinco de Mayo like a badass
Rethink the Mexican festival (and make like a margarita!)
Every year on May 5, people around the world mark a little-known Mexican victory over France by wearing sombreros and drinking too much tequila. Now, you know we LOVE to party, but how about we do it in a way that’s respectful to our Mexican sisters and brothers? This year, we’re encouraging you, our badass Beautyque family, to rethink how we do Cinco de Mayo. That means, for starters:
- Reading up on your history and understanding what you’re even celebrating. Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican army’s defeat of France at the Battle of Puebla. It is NOT, as many think, Mexican independence day, which was declared more than 50 years before.
- Rethinking all those cultural stereotypes – drop the fake mustaches, maracas, and cheap sombreros, everyone! Instead, we should be respectfully honoring the culture we’re celebrating.
- Learning about and supporting the cases of Mexican women like Sandra Castaneda, who are disproportionately affected by the US’s immigration policies.
Then, while you’re growing in knowledge and power, you can bask in these margarita-inspired Beautyque NYC goodies.
