Make the summer-to-fall skincare switcheroo

Welcome to Knowledge Bomb Friday! As we slip gently away from summer, Labor Day weekend beginning to feel like an ancient memory, most of us are probably sticking to the same skincare routine that has served us well all year. But hold that thought!

Summer has taken its toll, and as the seasons change, the sensitive organ that is our skin needs a little extra loving. Here’s how to prepare it for winter.

  • Exfoliate

All that sun and sweat can cause a build-up of dead cells. Bury them with a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week, whenever your skin starts to look dull.

  • Cleanse

The gel-based or foaming cleanser that has worked so well in summer isn’t necessarily your best call for fall. The skin will start producing less oil, so switch up to a cream-based cleanser, or one with a moisturizer.

  • Tone

Avoid an alcohol-based toner, which tends to dry out the skin, and opt for something more gentle and balancing instead,

  • Moisturize

Cooler temperatures and less humidity can cause dry skin, flakiness, breakouts, redness, and dullness. So upgrade your light, summer moisturizer for a thicker, more intense one. The one exception would be if you have oily, acne-prone skin, which won’t thank you for that heavy texture. Look for ingredients such as glycerin, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid, which will all help to restore the lipid barrier. And include a moisturizing serum for some extra hydration happiness.

  • Have a sleepover

If you’ve simplified your routine over the summer, to avoid clogging pores with a ton of products, feel free to lift that ban. Bring back those eye creams to combat puffiness and fine lines, and introduce a facial oil or overnight mask, to deliver a hydration boost while you sleep.

  • Don’t forget your body

If your face is cracking up with the colder weather, think how the rest of your skin feels. Give it some love with a rich body lotion from top to toe.

  • One thing that hasn’t changed is the need to still wear SPF. Sun damage still happens when there are clouds in the sky and it feels like Sibera in the shade.
