What is self-care? We’re glad you asked. Because, as we move through Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s an important question.
The Oxford Dictionary defines it this way:
the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.
"expressing oneself is an essential form of self-care"
Glamour magazine connects the dots even further, saying: “Beauty, grooming and mental health have long intersected. As a psychological signifier of our mental well-being, beauty is crucial. Historically when we felt good, cleansing ourselves, grooming ourselves and doing makeup and hair serve to increase our confidence and self-esteem.”
And while we’re not about to suggest that a little lipstick and a bath bomb will make the world’s mental health crisis go away, it’s also important to recognize that self-care is NOT self-indulgent. In the midst of an epidemic of anxiety and depression, doing what you can to manage daily stressors – whatever puts a smile on your face and brings you a moment of joy – will help boost your long-term health.
