‘Why I gave my young daughter a v*brator’
Is 2024 the year we start talking openly and frankly about women’s sexual health? Our social media is starting to see a surge in content that is giving us hope for a future without shame, embarrassment or awkwardness around the subject of our own bodies.
First, we watched cognitive-behavioral coach Robin Buckley’s Ted Talk in which she describes buying a vibrator for her 13-year-old daughter.
“I wanted to support her in the safe exploration of her body,” she says, reasoning: “Why does a vibrator make us uncomfortable and Viagra does not?
“Girls becoming familiar with their bodies is about health,” she explains. “Masturbation helps girls reduce stress, ease headaches, and alleviate cramps associated with their periods. And when they know their bodies, they can better own their bodies.
“Too often, others are dictating what girls should expect, want, and put up with,” she says.
“This is about helping our girls step into their power, raising them to become strong women who can speak up for themselves, whether they are in the bedroom or the boardroom.”
We’d be fascinated to know what you think.
Then in @womenofimpact, sex expert @missjaiya explains why she believes so many women are having such bad sex.
“One of the biggest reasons is that we have a lack of comprehensive, actually accurate sex education.
“We’ve only touched the surface - like the tip of the iceberg - as to what’s possible erotically, especially with our bodies,” she says. “And then we have a whole layer of shame on top of it, so we can’t talk about it. If I admit something’s not right, that’s not OK. Where do I even go for this education to empower myself erotically?
“Getting into your body and understanding what your body is actually turned on by is a big piece of it,” she explains.
So, beauty, we’re here to open up the conversation and invite you to explore your own exquisite, magical body - perhaps for the first time - with no time pressures, no specific end goal in mind, and zero shame.
Masturbation is good for both our emotional and physical health. For one thing - the safest sex we can have is with ourselves!
But it’s also proven to release sexual tension, help us sleep better, improve self-esteem and body image, it can help treat sexual problems, and strengthen muscle tone in our pelvic and anal areas.
It helps us figure out what works for us sexually: where does it feel good to be touched; how much pressure is too much; do we like to go fast or slow? When we know how to have an orgasm on our own, we’ll be better equipped to have one with a partner.
And when we’re comfortable talking about our bodies, we’re more able to protect ourselves against STDs and unintended pregnancy.
So this year, resolve to explore YOU.
